Last night I saw the movie Fight Club again. In my opinion, it contains some great ideas on life philosophy. Although there are some radical ones as well, their roots are what I find valuable.
The scene that I liked the most this time is the threatening of the grocery store worker. For those of you who have cannot recall it, or who have not seen the movie, here is a brief description. At one point, the "two main characters" or more exactly Tyler, goes to a small grocery store and pointing a gun in the face of the store worker, pushes him out in the back. He makes the guy kneel and points the gun to the back of his head. Then he asks the grocery store worker to give him his wallet. The worker is crying - he obviously does not want to die. Tyler takes out of the wallet an old college ID and asks the worker what he went to school for. On the cashier responding: "biology," Tyler asks the man what he wanted to become. Through tears the worker responds - vet doctor. Then Tyler tells the man to go home, to leave the grocery store and to go for what he wants to be. He kicks the crying man and the worker runs away still crying. Then Tyler says something like: "Tomorrow is going to be the best day of his life! His breakfast is going to taste in a way like no-one else's breakfast!"
Yes! I totally agree. The man almost died. He realized that his life was his greatest tresure. Of course his day would be different. There is a great chance that this man would actually change his life and go for what he wanted to do the most. There is something else about the scene of the movie that has to be mentioned. Why did the grocery store worker cry when the gun was pointed at his head? Who would not cry in such a situation? Who would accept the situation calm and unaffected? A person who has achieved what he wants from his life, a person who has realized that life is a fight and at some point, everyone dies. Such a person has been living his dream and is not afraid that there is something that he has not seen, accomplished or experienced. Such a man is fearless and has nothing to lose, although he has a family, kids and a loving partner.
The grocery store worker was afraid. He had a lot to lose - he had not gone chasing his dream, and accomplishing his desired purpose. He was afraid, because if he died, he would have lost the chance to go for his dream. He would have never probably gone for this dream although he has always had the chance to do it.
I simply like the scene. I think it is a great way to show how disastrous a life can become if one does not go for realizing their dreams. Although the movie uses it in support for a different purpose, this scene on itself is of exceptional value for me.
Think about it. Are you living up to your dreams?
